New York-based musician, composer and entrepreneur David Nichtern wrote the 1970s hit "Midnight at the Oasis" that singer Maria Muldaur turned into a pop classic and is also an Emmy-award winning, Grammy nominated composer, guitarist, and producer. He has recorded with Jerry Garcia, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Maria Muldaur, Dr. John and Billy Crystal.
As a longtime Tibetan Buddhist practitioner Nichtern explains, "Music has so much power to change the atmosphere, to modulate our physical, mental and emotional landscape," When he asked his Buddhist teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, what he heard when he listened to music, he said: "The mind of the composer."
So, Nichtern maintains, "If the music is coming from a spacious, elegant and uplifted state of mind, it generates the same in the listener, consciously and sub-consciously."
