For centuries the land upon which Blackberry Farm is situated has provided for its inhabitants. The Cherokee and then the first Appalachian settlers learned to live from the land. They discovered how to cultivate what would sustain them in this place and how to forage what was already abundant in the field, forest and stream. Their lives were lived in harmony with this place and as such became part of it. Today, we find ourselves in a different time than the first settlers. We are not forced to learn to live off the land to survive. However, we choose to take the same approach because it links us with the special place that is West Millers Cove in Eastern Tennessee. Farming provides the means to safeguard the natural beauty of this land and to experience it hands-on. This effort affords our guests with the means to truly be part of this place. While you are here, you will sample the products gleaned from the land by our farmstead team. You may take part in the farm activities, which will increase your understanding and therefore appreciation of the relationship that we have to the land and to the food it provides us.
On this farm, our goal is to harness the natural systems at play. One species’ need is another’s castoff. There is a symbiotic relationship that requires the stewardship of the farmer who must understand the interrelations of the various actors on the farm. The farmer purposefully puts these actors together at points to benefit from their exchange and separates others to avoid loss of soil, crop or animal. In the garden, one plant is placed next to another so that the pests that would normally infest the first plant are put off by the second. Both plants flourish and the pest is naturally driven from the garden without the harmful side effects of a chemical spray to the plant’s nutritive properties and the soil health. In the pasture, the sheep are rotated to new spaces just ahead of the maturing pests. This ensures a safe environment for the sheep and the continued health of the pasture and soil. Nature provides all the answers, it is the farmer that must seek to ask the appropriate question and recognize the correct answer for the posed question. The question is not how to get rid of the pest, but what does the pest need so that it will not harm what the farmer desires.
